The time is drawing near for the 2022 Islamorada Sailfly Fishing Tournament: If you have not registered yet get your entries in soon, as the limit will be 20 entries

Fly fishing for Atlantic sailfish has never been commonly practiced in the Florida Keys until now. The technique involves slow trolling with live baits with no hooks in order to raise the sailfish. Once the fish is raised it is teased close to the boat. The Captain must then shift to neutral as the angler cast, trolling is not acceptable within the rules of IGFA fly fishing. At that moment the mate who is “teasing” snatches the hookless bait from the water and simultaneously the fly angler casts the fly to the fish. If teamwork, timing, and coordination come together, a hookup results!

  1. In January of 2001, 14 teams gathered for 2 days of fly fishing for Atlantic Sailfish in the First Islamorada SailFly Fishing Tournament

  2. Lots of sails were raised and teased but none were caught for scoring.

  3. We declared the event a 14-way tie for first place and all those teams today grace the perpetual trophy housed at the Islamorada Fishing Outfitters.

  4. The Captains, anglers, and mates have refined the techniques over the last 22 years since that first SailFly.

The Captains, anglers, and mates have refined the techniques over the last 22 years since that first SailFly. Just as many fish are raised as though we were fishing conventional tackle methods and the hookup ratios on fly have increased dramatically, but if you are looking to land biomass this is not the event for you! If you are looking for one of the most challenging, exciting, competitive sailfish tournaments and rewarding fishing opportunities the Florida Keys has to offer, jump right in!
